DORM WARS 2017: A competition for a cause

On Monday, students from across Lee University’s campus will come together at 8 p.m. in the Paul Dana Walker Arena to compete in the 25th annual Dorm Wars.

A Lee University tradition, Dorm Wars will bring over 1,500 students and guests to Walker Arena to witness fierce competition between various residence hall representatives.

Residential Life and Housing designs the event to push students to their physical and mental limits to determine who is the best of the dorms, all while raising money for worthy organizations.

“This year we are celebrating Dorm Wars’ 25th anniversary,” said Katie Rutkowski, event organizer and area coordinator for Residential Life and Housing.

“In honor of the special occasion, we are excited to unveil a mystery event this year, and believe it is going to be a fun and creative addition to the overall event.

“We are looking forward to the excitement our students bring to the event and cannot wait to see all the residence hall themes and intro routines come to life,” she added.

This year’s teams will compete to raise money for The ANDOR Project, Boys & Girls Clubs, The Caring Place, Family Promise, Frontline Alliance International, Habitat for Humanity, New Hope Pregnancy Center, Project: Free2Fly, The Refuge, The Salvation Army, Second Life Chattanooga, and The Zion Project.

Students from each residence hall, along with a designated faculty sponsor, will volunteer to compete for the cause. Other Lee staff members will be involved as officials and scorekeepers.

“After three years of competing in Dorm Wars, I can honestly say that it is one of the best events Lee has to offer,” said Rebekah Hankley, a senior intercultural studies major. “Not only does it offer extreme enthusiasm and hype, but it also allows the student body to come together and recognize so many amazing organizations in the surrounding area that are promoting hope, love and justice.”

Students will participate in the traditional shopping cart race, a crowd favorite, and the obstacle course. This year there will also be a new event, “Mind Over Matter,” details of which will not be revealed until the night of Dorm Wars.

Along with these events, residence hall teams are also scored on the opening intro routine, which each team choreographs and performs at the beginning of the event.

At the end of the night, one male and one female residence hall will walk away with the coveted title of “Dorm Wars Champion.”

Admission is free and open to the public. The event will also be available for live stream viewing at https:// livestream.com/leeu.
