Ellen Geneva Maney Burns

Ellen Geneva Maney Burns, 94,   of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, in a local heathcare facility. 

She was born on June 18, 1925, in Hayesville, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Alice Mae Smith Maney and John Narvel Maney.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Burns; her sisters: Minnie Geren and Polly Mikel; her brothers, Clyne Maney and Don Maney; and a special friend, J.C. Cartwright.

Burns worked for 35 years in the hosiery mill industry as a knitter, and she always felt that the hard work is what kept her going so long. She lived in the same house here in Cleveland for almost 71 years. 

Her greatest pastime, other than talking on the phone, was visiting her friends and family, taking care of her flowers and tomato plants and taking care of her cats. 

She was well-known for her fried apple pies and her chicken and dumplings.  She also was an organizing member of the Chestuee Chapter of the DAR.  She  was a member of the Community Hall Church and was 11 when she started attending the church.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Burns; her son, Gerald Burns and his wife, Linda, all of Cleveland; her grandchildren: Ashley Meagher and her husband, Jim, and Brandon Burns and his wife, Maggie; her great-grandchildren:Burns Meagher and Reece Meagher; her stepgrandchildren: Maizie and Emma Gillespie; and she was blessed to have many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly; and a very special cousin; as well as her many friends.

The Remembrance of Life service will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 21, 2019, at  1 p.m. at the Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services, North Ocoee Chapel, with Pastor Jeannie Cissom and Pastor Guinn Green officiating. 

Interment will follow in the Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, with Jim Meagher, Brandon Burns, Burns Meagher, Bobbie Cissom, Gilbert Geren and Dale Maney serving as casket bearers. 

The family thanks the staff of Tennova HealthCare, Life Care Center of Cleveland, Helping Hands of Cleveland, Hearth Hospice and  her caregiver and friend, Kathy Kendrick. 

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday at  the funeral home.
