Lady Flames complete sweep

The Lee University softball team brought the big sticks to Butler Field on Friday as it smashed five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Montevallo (Ala.) Falcons.

Abby McKinney hit the first of the long balls, a three-run shot, in the first inning of game one to give the Lady Flames an early 4-0. Lee would go on to take game one, 8-5. McKinney finished the day with six hits and five RBI.

Bailey Church hit her second home run of the day in the nightcap to back a quality start from Taylor De Adder as Lee took the nightcap with a 6-3 victory.

The Lady Flames completed the series sweep on Saturday with a 12-7 victory, including blasts from Claudia Jones and Stevie Baird. (No other information was provided on Saturday's game by press time.)

The wins move Lee to 22-28 on the year and 10-16 in the Gulf South Conference. The Falcons fall to 23-25 and 11-16.

The Lady Flames, which are battling for one of the three remaining spots in the GSC Tournament, will wrap up their regular season at Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) this weekend with a Saturday doubleheader and a single game Sunday.

Friday Games

GAME 1

LADY FLAMES 8

FALCONS 5

Shonna Penney pitched a complete game in the circle, and the Lady Flames clobbered four home runs to take Friday's opener, 8-5.

The Lady Flames offense pounded out 14 hits and five extra base hits. Kayla Louie doubled, singled twice and scored a run. Claudia Jones broke a 4-4 with a solo homer in the fourth inning. De Adder followed with a blast in the fifth frame, and Bailey Church wrapped it up with a two-run shot left.

Penney improved to 10-15 as she pitched seven innings, scattered 12 hits and allowed five runs.

Abbey Pratt (8-5) drew the loss for the Falcons, allowing six runs on 10 hits over four-plus innings. Alexis Bonanno threw two relief innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out four.

Brianna Stella, Holly LaForce and Caroline Pope each had two hits for the Falcons in the contest. Lady Sarah Federico and Pope doubled to account for two of the extra base hits.

Church not only delivered at the plate but the junior catcher threw out three runners on the bases to stifle Montevallo's comeback attempt.

GAME 2

LADY FLAMES 6

FALCONS 3

De Adder (8-10) allowed just three runs on six hits and fanned three to guide the Lady Flames to a 6-3 win in the night cap.

Just like in game one, the Lady Flames wasted little time getting the bats going as they put up four runs in the first inning. McKinney singled home De Adder for the first run before Church drilled a three-run homer to right-center.

Federico would get the visitors on the board in the four on a single to center that plated Bertossi.

Jones extended the lead back to four with a sacrifice fly, and McKinney ended her big day at the dish with a single through the right side to score Lily Hatcher.

The Falcons would add solo home runs by Federico in the sixth and Marisa Sosa in the seventh but would draw closer.

Mychael McMillan (7-8) went all six innings in the circle for Montevallo allowing 10 hits and six runs. She struck out three and walked a batter.
