Despite the fact Cleveland High scored 18 runs the night before against Hixson and Bradley Central allowed 18 runs to Soddy-Daisy, Tuesday's "Crosstown Clash" was a one-run difference with the host Bearettes ahead after six innings.
Then came the final at bats. When all was said and done, the Lady Raiders had exploded for 13 runs in the top of the seventh to post a 20-8 tally, for their second victory of the season over their archrivals.
Not only does it mark the first Cleveland sweep of the Bearettes in the last six regular seasons, but the Lady Raiders had recorded just one win in the last 13 meetings between the two before this campaign.
Bradley (3-17, 1-8 District 5-AAA) will try to bounce back with home games against AA opponents — today against Meigs County and tomorrow with Sequoyah.
Cleveland (10-11, 3-5) will take a couple of days off before hosting 5-AAA leader Walker Valley (19-7, 7-0) Friday.
The Lady Raiders opened the scoring Tuesday, when Madilyn Kidd singled and eventually came around on a groundout by Sierra Brown in the top of the first.
Bradley answered with a pair of scores in its first try, as well. Riley Sermons opened the bottom of the first with a double. After Alexis Parham was hit by a pitch and Haley Campbell singled to load the bases, Carly Chastain brought home the first run with a sac fly to left field. Aubreigh Marchese plated the second with a groundout to the right side of the infield.
The Bearettes put up a 4-spot in their second try, thanks to consecutive hits by Makayla Goree, Sermons, Parham, Campbell, Chastain (double) and Marchese. Chastain plated a pair of runs with her two-bagger, while Campbell and Marchese picked up the other two "ribbies."
After scoreless third and fourth innings, the visitors touched home plate six times in the fifth to retake the lead.
Five straight two-out hits accounted for most of the damage. After Kayla Davenport plated Emma Miles, who had reached on an error, with the first run of the rally with a groundout, Kidd drove home Lydia Martin, who had gotten on thanks to a fielder's choice.
Emma Bayne and Brown followed with singles, the latter driving in Kidd, before Lauren Adamson and Kailee Wilson stroked back-to-back doubles. Adamson plated a pair of teammates, while Wilson drove home Adamson for a 7-6 edge.
The hosts answered in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs on a Parham triple to score Sermons, who got on with a fielder's choice, before Campbell brought in Parham with a sac fly for an 8-7 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Raiders rapped out a dozen hits, with 16 of their 18 batters in the rally reaching base in the top of the seventh.
Kidd, who went 4-for-5, plus reached on an error in the win, smoked a triple and a single in the final explosion. Brown also had a pair of hits, including a double in the rally, while Miles knocked in three teammates with two singles and Senn added two more "ribbies" with a pair of hits in the seventh.
Sarah Pritchard set Bradley down in order in the bottom of the frame to close out 5 1/3 innings of relief work to earn the pitching victory.
Cleveland got a trio of RBIs from four players — Kidd, Brown, Wilson and Miles — plus Adamson and Senn had a pair in the victory.
Brown and Senn helped out with a trio of hits, while Bayne and Wilson had multi-hit outings as well.
Campbell went 3-for-3 and drove in three for the hosts, while Sermons, Parham and Goree each had a couple of knocks, including an extra base hit apiece. Parham was also hit by a pitch.
