The city of Cleveland will be offering lifeguard review and certification courses this spring.

The lifeguard review course costs $100 and the lifeguard certification course costs $200.

All classes will be held at the Denning Center, 350 Central Ave., Cleveland, TN 37311.

The prerequisites for the lifeguard courses include candidates must be 15 years of age, able to swim 300 yards continuously; tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs and complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by swimming 20 yards, surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object from a depth of 7 to 10 feet, and swim 20 yards on the back to the starting point.

The classes will provide entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the lifeguarding course will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/FirstAid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

Course 1 will be held at the Denning Center, 350 Central Avenue. N.W., on March 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; March 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; March 24, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and March 25, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Course 2 will be held April 7, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; April 8, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; April 14, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and April 15, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Course 3 will be held April 21, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; April 22, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; April 28, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and April 29, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Lifeguard Review courses are an abbreviated lifeguarding course that briefly reviews course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing.

Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required for the review session.

Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, which is valid for two years.

The sessions are May 19 and May 20, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days.
