Two perspectives: A farewell, a hello

As we promised this summer, we begin this new chapter of our lives by saying thank you: Thank you, first of all, to my family — the foundation of everything.

Thank you to my extended family and friends who have believed in us from day one. And most of all, thank you Cleveland, Tennessee, for this amazing opportunity to serve our city on a hill, our city that we love.

As we stand at this historic juncture here in our historic hometown, we are actually together writing a new chapter of our own history.  For the first time in almost 28 years, Cleveland, Tennessee, has chosen a new mayor,  a new ambassador of "The City with Spirit."

Yes, this is indeed "The City with Spirit," but it is also so much more. Things are good here in Cleveland. The local economy is good. Local industry is good. Jobs are good. Schools are good. But with God’s help and the support of all of our citizens in every community — together — we can take Cleveland, Tennessee, from good to great!

Cleveland is an amazing place to live, work and raise our family. That’s why so many of us are here.

My goal is to continue the great success of the past, working with the Cleveland City Council, our city manager and our city department heads; and then, to take Cleveland on to even greater heights by building upon the relationships, friendships and connections that I have been fortunate to build during these 12 years of service.

Working for you as your community's state representative has been the greatest honor of my life. My family and I thank you for entrusting us with this calling. And we thank you for allowing us to serve you all.

But 12 years is a long time to be away from family, and we believe it is time to serve our local community and families that we love so much. We love our hometown and we seek to serve and give back to our local community — our Cleveland family — that has given so much to all of us.

I am thankful that during the summer, my own story of how much Cleveland has given to our family was openly shared in public forums. You see, when I came to Cleveland as a young teenager, I was not able to afford Lee College, as it was known back then.  A local leader took a chance on me, and gave me the opportunity to attend Lee, which changed the trajectory of my life and the lives of my entire family.  I will be forever grateful for that opportunity.

My goal is for Cleveland to not only be "The City With Spirit," but also be  a "City of Opportunity."

The Brooks family asks for your prayers. We thank you for your support, and we are grateful that our friends and neighbors made the choice they did in selecting the next mayor of Cleveland, Tennessee!
