Lee University’s Matthew Fisher, associate professor of communication, has had his short film, “Lawn,” selected to screen at the 24th Annual Austin Film Festival.

Fisher describes “Lawn” as a 10-minute narrative fiction film about Lionel, a weary Tennessean who is shaken by his wife’s unexpected pregnancy. For the sake of his unborn child, Lionel embarks on an odyssey to reclaim the life that got away from him, starting with an overgrown lawn.

The selection committee for the Austin Film Festival called Fisher’s film “engaging and genuine” and said they “can’t wait to help share it with the world.”

“Lawn” has already been screened at a number of regional film festivals and won Best Overall Film at the Azalea Film Festival in Alabama. Fisher’s 2015 film, “Pilgrim,” shot in Reykjavik, Iceland, screened at the Cine Gear Expo and LA Shorts Fest.

A Lee alumnus, Fisher returned to campus as a faculty member in 2011. He teaches classes on screenwriting, directing, film theory, and film criticism.

Fisher has written and directed other short films that have won several awards and been screened at festivals internationally including the Nashville Film Festival, Cannes Court Métrage, and the Short Shorts Film Festival in Tokyo.

Fisher has a master of fine arts in dramatic writing, from Savannah College of Art and Design.

The Austin Film Festival screening of “Lawn” will take place Oct. 26-Nov. 2.
