McConnell earns top TCCAA honor

Whitney McConnell, a 2018 Cleveland State Community College women's cross country alumna, received a great honor on Thursday night before the college's volleyball game.

McConnell earned a Tennessee Community College Athletic Association academic award for her dedication in the classroom last season, receiving the Highest Academic Honor for Women's Cross Country from the conference, as she posted the highest individual GPA of all of the women's runners.

Cleveland State President Dr. Bill Seymour, Athletic Director Mike Policastro and Head Cross Country Coach David Kyle were present to present the award to McConnell, who was the first cross country runner Cleveland State ever signed.

"Whitney is a incredible young lady," Kyle said. "I watched her run most of her young life at local meets and road races. ... She worked hard for two years running and in the classroom.

"She led by example and was a vital part of building our program to what I want here — a great student athlete," Kyle added.  "She will continue her education and no doubt be very successful at UTC. This honor was very much deserved."

College officials said they are proud of Whitney and wish her the best of luck as she attends University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
