The Ooltewah Owls swooped down on Mike Turner Field on a frigid Tuesday evening and quickly completed a two-game, District 5-AAA series sweep of Walker Valley by a final score of 4-0.
For the second night in a row, the Mustangs could not solve the outstanding Owl pitching as the visitors posted their second straight shutout.
On Tuesday, Isaac Hughes took his turn on the mound for the Owls and allowed only one hit through five innings of work. Hughes and the Owls allowed only five base runners on a hit, a walk and three defensive miscues.
Ooltewah (4-3, 3-1 District 5-AAA) collected all the runs they needed in the top of the second inning on three hits, two free passes and one hit batter. Eli Wells pushed the first run across after taking one in the back for the team with the bases full of Owls, while lead-off hitter Payton Keiser singled home another for a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs (0-4, 0-4) almost took the goose egg off their side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Dylan Allender reached safely on an error. Courtesy runner Codee Fromm stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. The throw from the catcher got by the third baseman, but not far enough. As Fromm raced home, the Owls third sacker recovered in time to make the throw to the plate and deny the Mustangs a run.
Walker Valley left runners on second and third in the third frame and again in the sixth while Ooltewah doubled its lead to 4-0 in the fifth. Keiser and Colby Taylor each singled and scored as three Mustang miscues contributed to the scoring.
Dylan Calfee picked up the only Mustangs' hit with a lead-off single in the third inning.
Allender took the loss on the hill for Walker Valley, scattering six hits and fanning seven in five innings of work. John Klepzig only allowed one base runner in two innings of work in relief.
Hughes picked up the win for the Owls while Jax Howard faced one batter over the minimum in two innings of work to seal the win. Third baseman Jacob Robinson turned a sure double into a groundout with an outstanding catch and throw in the fourth.
Weather permitting, the Mustangs will try once again to capture a win with a trip to Polk County on Thursday.
