Walk in love: Paul’s resolutions

Walk in love

1Thessalonians 5:6 (KJV): “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”

Call them recommendations, admonitions, instructions or suggestions, Paul's 12 advices to the Thessalonians (1 Thessalonians 5:12-23 KJV) will make one's life pleasing in God's sight. But they can't be regarded as rules. They can only be carried out by the love for Jesus Christ. The list is a model walk for the child of God.

Paul gives the reason for this “model of conduct.” He prefaces these verses with a recognition of identity – children of the light and children of the day. So, he says, put on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet for the hope of salvation. Whatever we do is done for Him because Jesus died for our salvation. There could not be a more compelling reason for this “walk.”

So, Paul says, “Wherefore, comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” Our walk with Christ goes beyond the benefits to oneself. “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9) … “comfort yourselves together, and edify one another ...”

Receiving these admonitions should come naturally and joyfully to the Christian. They show the purity, the sanctifying power and the faithfulness of the believer. What a beautiful outlook! These positive statements need no further explanation or modification. They were given in love, and in love is the only way they can be practiced.

1. Know them which labor among you and esteem them for their work's sake – be at peace.
2. Warn them that are unruly.
3. Comfort the feeble minded; support the weak.
4. Be patient toward all men.
5. Do not render evil for evil; follow that which is good.
6. Rejoice evermore.
7. Pray without ceasing.
8. In everything give thanks.
9. Quench not the Spirit.

10. Despise not prophesyings.

11. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

12. Abstain from all appearances of evil.

And the results:

1 Thessalonians 5:23, 24 (KJV): “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.”
