On Saturday, Aug. 26, Family Cornerstones Inc. and Starfish will be hosting their first ever Roll & Read event on the Greenway.

“Starfish is an affiliate of the national organization Parents as Teachers. Last year, Parents as Teachers started promoted these Roll & Reads across the country and so we decided that we would have one,” explained Family Cornerstone Executive Director Chrissy Pugh.

“We really want this to be a big event and it’s open to the entire community.”

Roll & Read, a free event, will be set up on the Greenway from 9 a.m. to noon in front of the Church of God International Headquarters near the Keith and 25th street intersection. Those attending can park in the COG headquarters parking lot.

Families can visit different reading stations along a half-mile loop, with the opportunity to read various books or enjoy story times with the volunteers. Currently, Pugh is expecting there to be 10 reading stations, including stations from Robbins Family Dental, the YMCA, Cleveland City Schools, Bradley County Schools, the Imagination Library, Dixie Day Spay, the Cleveland/Bradley County Public Library, the fire department and elected officials.

At the Dixie Day Spay station, children will be able to pick a stuffed animal to take home as a new “buddy” to read to. There will also be the chance for children to make their own book and bookmark.

“We’re just trying to bring the community together to not only promote being outside and enjoying the Greenway, but also the importance of reading and reading together as a family and celebrating those skills, especially as school is back in session,” Pugh said.

Sponsoring partners for Roll & Read are the Cleveland/Bradley County Public Library, Bradley County Schools, Cleveland City Schools, Church of God International, Community of Christ and Kohl’s.

There are still a few spaces for reading stations and volunteer opportunities for Roll & Read. Those interested or those who have questions can call 423-559-1112 or visit http://www.familycornerstones.org/.
