Move it AND Lose it


Tired of feeling larger at the end of December than you were at its beginning? The Cleveland YMCA is hosting its Move It AND Lose It event on Jan. 6, to promote healthy lifestyle choices following the seemingly inevitable end-of-year feasts. 

Gyms can be intimidating for some; yet, the gym is where many people flock when the holidays cease. The Cleveland Y is hoping to change that stereotype through its open house, called Move It AND Lose It. 

"We have put together this conglomeration of classes that just include snippets of them, so that way the people who come to this event will get a small taste of each class," said group-fitness instructor Dina Dell. 

She believes that the layout of the event allows people to test the waters of different classes offered, and lets them see which ones best fit their needs and workout styles. 

"I talked to Kylie Machacek and our Y leadership, and said, 'How do you-all feel about doing a sort of fitness blitz that showcases all of our fitness classes at the start of the year?'" Dell said. 

According to Dell, the name "Move It AND Lose It" seeks to draw attention to the "AND" in the middle, as the Y wants others to know that you can work out and lose weight while gaining muscle. 

The event begins at 9 a.m. on Jan. 6, and runs until 11 a.m. A meet-and-greet begins at 11, which will feature refreshments, door prizes and opportunities to meet the Y staff. 

"Most workout courses typically go back-to-back, which doesn't allow much time to get to know your instructor. By doing this event, we hope to remedy that and let instructors and potential members get to know one another," said Dell. 

Exercise coordinator Kylie Machacek elaborated on the community feeling that the Y brings to its members. 

"We have so many phenomenal classes, teachers and facilities that we thought several months ago that we have to show what we have to offer!" said Machacek. 

Machacek also stressed how the Cleveland Y is not like a country club, as many people believe it to be.  

"We are so much more than just a gym," she said. "We have youth programs, diabetes prevention, post-cancer courses, and since we are a nonprofit, all of the proceeds are going back into these programs." 

Some potential door prizes could include free, monthlong memberships for one person and a friend, as Dell states that many people dislike going to the gym or working out alone. 

"I have an interest in fitness and in helping others get moving, so helping with this event was just my interest in helping all of these things come together," Dell said. "I currently teach a class at the Y called 'Body Pump,' which is barbell-focused for men or women, and is great for all workout levels." 

Other courses include cardiovascular exercises, strength work, aerobic activity, resistance work, dance aerobics like "Zumba," kickboxing and much more. 

"We have classes for everyone," said Machacek. "If you like to dance, lift weights, kick-box, yoga or whatever it is you like, we have something challenging for people who work out all the time or easy classes for beginners. We have something for everyone." 

Machacek states that they are really wanting to see people at their event who have never set foot in the Y, or a gym. She explains that coming to the Y is giving to a cause, as proceeds are put back into programs that support the community. 

"When you are part of a cause, you have the compassion that goes along with that. So we aren't just looking at building big muscles, but heart muscles too," said Machacek. 

Tours will be given and information tables will be available for those interested in seeing what the Y has to offer. 

Move It AND Lose It is an exclusive event that is only running at the Cleveland Y.
