TVA set for cyber threats

TVA Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer John M. Thomas III said Wednesday the utility is continuously active in protecting its power grid from outside threats.

The question concerning the agency’s security was posed in light of news reports this week that hackers linked to North Korea recently targeted U.S. electric power companies with so-called "spear-phishing" emails.

In an interview with the Cleveland Daily Banner, Thomas said TVA’s cybersecurity structure is “well funded.”

“We spend about three times as much today as we did three or four years ago on cybersecurity, specifically,” Thomas said. “Not only is it an area that we consider of critical importance from a risk management perspective, but more and more funds are going to ensuring the robustness and the protection of our cybersecurity assets.”

Thomas said TVA also works closely with other federal agencies “in terms of what kind of attacks are out there and what is emerging.”

“There are layers of security, not only on the cyber side but on the physical side,” added TVA spokesperson Scott Fiedler. “As a federal agency, we have the advantage of partnering with other agencies who share knowledge, and can learn from one another on a continuing basis.”
