William Thomas “Will” Matthews II, 29, of Riceville passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at his residence.
He had many hobbies, some of which included horseback riding, riding four-wheelers and weight lifting.
He was a 2007 graduate of McMinn County High School. He was an all-around athlete, beginning with the Riceville Youth Football League and later playing both football and baseball for McMinn County High School. He traveled throughout the Southeast on the baseball traveling team.
He had many friends and family, whom he truly loved and was known as being kind, polite and shy. He always had a smile on his face, loved the outdoors and working on the Matthews’ farm.
He was a member of Spring Creek Church of Christ. He will be loved and missed by all.
A native of Riceville and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was preceded in death by his sister, Brooke Denise Matthews (8-15-2016); paternal grandfather, Paul Thomas Matthews (3-23-2015); maternal grandparents, Bill and Virginia Snyder; and aunt, Cindy Underwood.
Survivors include his parents: Lisa Snyder Powell and husband, Lee Powell, of Niota, and Bill Matthews and wife, Jan Pinner Matthews, of Riceville; stepsister, Jodi Helweg of Pensacola, Fla.; stepbrother, Josh Davis of Alachua, Fla.; paternal grandmother, Mary Ruth Varnell Matthews of Riceville; two aunts: Susan Buttram and husband, Jim, of Lenoir City and Jeanie Dunn of Niota; two uncles: Joe Axley of Athens and Bill Snyder and wife, Kathy, of Riceville; two great-aunts: Ruby Matthews of Riceville and Edna Pickens of Athens; and cousins: Matt and Nick Buttram, Stephanie Frank, Mia Hyde, Jason Burke, Allen Walker, Jeremy Walker, Tony Dunn, Eric Axley, Cayci Farmer, Travis Snyder and Aaron Snyder.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Aug. 27, 2017, in Upper Spring Creek Cemetery, Junction of County Road 100 and 117, Riceville with Dr. Mike Frazier officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Nathan Walker, Jacob Kennedy, Matt Buttram, Nick Buttram, Matt Walker and Jason Burke.
There will be no formal visitation.
