For more than 90 years, residents of Cleveland and Bradley County have been participating in a long-standing tradition to provide neighbors who find themselves lacking during the holiday season, a basket full of food for a Christmas dinner.

The program, more widely known as the William Hall Rodgers Christmas Basket Fund, will continue with the tradition this year, hoping to provide 900 food baskets to local families who find themselves struggling to make ends meet.

“Each year, we find ourselves amazed at the generosity of this community. It’s part of the Cleveland spirit,” remarked Matt Ryerson, president and CEO of United Way of the Ocoee Region.

While the program has long been run by volunteers, this year brings in morel resources with the addition of United Way of the Ocoee Region.

“We are partnering very closely with the volunteers who have been running the operation for the last several years to make sure the heritage of the program is preserved, but we are excited to bring some new elements to it as well,” Ryerson continued.

Some of the new elements include additional resources on site for families who are signing up to receive food.

Ryerson pointed out, “We often see that food is rarely the only problem, and we want to surround these families with holistic support to see them reach a place of stability.”

Other new elements include making the process digital.

Registration is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at Museum Center at 5ive Points (200 Inman St., Cleveland, TN 37311). One member per address is allowed to register and must bring two forms of identification.  The baskets will be ready to be picked up in December prior to Christmas.

Funds are currently being accepted for the program and can be sent or dropped off at the following locations, ATTN: William Hall Rodgers:
