Youth leaders have successful fundraising for Habitat for Humanity

The 2019-20 Youth Leadership class of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce successfully raised $ 1,687.78 in funding support for Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland’s home construction fund this year as part of their annual service project.

“We often think it’s those who are wealthy that make the biggest difference in our community. Our Chamber Youth Leadership has shown another important path. They had dress down days, sold donuts, passed a helmet at a football game to collect and organized car washes. We are humbled by their enthusiasm to give back,” expressed Tammy Johnson, Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland executive director.
The 24 juniors and seniors from Bradley Central, Cleveland and Walker Valley high schools and Tennessee Christian Preparatory School will also volunteer “sweat equity” later this school year by working on a Habitat house or in the Habitat ReStore.
“These students are a true example of servant leadership and will forever impact a Bradley County family in a way that will last for generations,” added Johnson.
At the summer Youth Leadership retreat, organizers challenged the youth leaders to brainstorm creative ideas to raise funds for Habitat and raise a minimum of $400 at their respective schools.
Sherry Crye, coordinator of the Youth Leadership program, shared, “We are pleased with this year’s efforts as they learn the importance of giving back to their community.”
Youth Leadership is a workforce development program of the Chamber of Commerce designed to prepare young people for leadership in Cleveland and Bradley County. For information about the program, contact Sherry Crye with the Chamber at 423-472-6587 or visit www.clevelandchamber.com.
