The area’s Pokémon Trading Card Game players will meet in Cleveland Saturday to compete in exciting one-on-one battles in the 2010 Pokémon City Championships for the prestigious title of Pokémon City Champion.

The tournament is a free event open to all players, regardless of previous involvement in any Premier event. Registration and tournament location is at Dicehead Games at 200 Paul Huff Parkway. The event starts at 11:15 a.m.

Sanctioned by The Pokémon Company International, the City Championships provide local players the opportunity to test their Pokémon skills, strategy, and creativity.

Competitors are divided equally into three divisions: Junior (born in 2000 or later), Senior (born from 1996–1999), and Masters (born in 1995 or earlier).

Players in all divisions will compete for various Pokémon prizes, including Pokémon booster packs and a City Championships medal. Pokémon City Championships are the first title events in the Championship Series and premier rating points awarded there will go toward a potential invitation to the 2011 Pokémon World Championships held in San Diego next August.

Pokémon fans, family and friends are also invited to lend their support.

The free-to-play tournament offers players from the community the opportunity to socialize and battle in a fun and safe environment, improve their Pokémon deck strategy and earn premier ratings that could result in invitations to future Pokémon tournaments, according to Elaine Genest in public relations for Pokémon Company International.

The city tournaments are scheduled to take place all over the country and are the first event in the Play! Pokémon Championship Series, which culminate at the 2011 Play! Pokémon World Championships in August 2011.
