The basketball gods are being very unkind to the Polk County Wildcats.

Coach Randy Brewers’ team has dropped three consecutive games by the smallest of margins. The Wildcats were beaten a week earlier in a District 5-AA surprise at Meigs County, followed with a heart-breaking loss on Monday at Walker Valley and then were beaten in overtime by a point Friday by Hamilton Heights, 63-62.

The Polk County girls did salvage a victory at Hamilton Heights, improving to 16-5 on the season with a 47-35 victory.

The Wildkittens continued to play without the services of high-scoring Maclain Yowarsky, who is out with a foot injury.

The Polk County boys can blame Friday’s loss on an ice-cold first quarter. The Wildcats managed only four points in the period as the home team dashed out to a 10-4 lead.

Polk County rallied in the second quarter, heating up with a 26-point production to take a 30-26 advantage to the dressing room at halftime.

The up-and-down game continued through the second half, with the home team eventually taking the one-point victory.

Guard Alex Akins had a big game for Polk County, pumping 21 points through the hoop. Logan Brewer added 12 and Brock Raper got 11 for the Wildcats.

Padro Faller took game scoring honors for Hamilton Heights with 25, including three 3-points. Brunso Santana scored 17 for the winners.

The Polk County girls got back in the win column with a consistent performance.

Emily Wilson scored 12 and Haley Richmond and Stephanie Quallss got nine apiece as the Wildkittens pulled away in the second quarter and stayed in front the rest of the way.

The two teams matched 11-point productions in the first quarter, but Polkd County went on a 15-2 run in the second quarter for a 26-13 lead. Hamilton Heights played even with their visitors in the second half, but couldn’t cut intio Polk County’s lead.

Isidora Madzarevic topped the home team in scoring with 13, while teammate Kenyatta Newsom added nine.
