Lee ladies sweep in softball opener

CLEVELAND, Ga. — The Lee University softball team took to the road for their first Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) doubleheader and claimed a sweep, 14-0 and 8-3, over Truett-McConnell College.

Lee (8-2, 2-0) pushed across four insurance runs in the seventh inning of game two to expand upon a one-run lead.

The Lady Flames banged out 12 hits and took advantage of four TMC errors. Charlie Wooden was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI.

Danielle Balough recorded a double and a triple in two at bats. Tabitha Farrow (2-for-3) was the third Lady Flame with multiple hits in the game.

Caitlin Beshears (4-1) earned the win after giving up three runs on five hits in four innings of work. Beshears walked one and struck out two.

Brittany Balough pitched the final three innings and was credited with her first save after allowing just one hit and striking out one.

Truett-McConnell (3-11, 0-4) was led by Dani Lyons. Lyons was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.

Ashley Davis was tabbed with the loss. Davis gave up five earned runs, walked two and struck out two.

In the opener, Hernanza Ruiz was 4-for-4, including a double and a triple in leading Lee to the 14-0, five inning victory. Ruiz recorded four RBI and scored four runs.

Ana Coscorrosa and Nicole Rodriguez each delivered two hits. Coscorrosa scored three runs and knocked in four more, while Rodriguez plated two runners.

Brittany Balough scattered two hits and struck out four Lady Bears in earning her fourth win in five decisions.

Saturday’s SSAC doubleheader at Brenau University was rained out and will be rescheduled. The Lady Flames will take the field again at the University of Mobile on Tuesday. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
