Patterson leads field at AAU South Indoor National meet

JOHNSON CITY — A group of seven young men represented the Cleveland Express Track Club at the recent AAU South Indoor National Championships and each earned a medal at the prestigious event.

Running on the East Tennessee State University track in Johnson City, Bradley Central High School running sensation Paul Patterson led the local effort by winning the 3,000-meter run and finishing second in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter races.

Patterson posted a time of 9:27.98 to claim the top spot in the Intermediate age division’s 3,000-meter race. He also clocked times of 2:10.56 and 4:27.56 in the 800 and 1,500 runner-up finishes.

Teammate Harold Smith was second to Patterson in the 3,000, posting a time of 9:46.38. He also took third in the 1500 (4:33.51) and eighth in the 800 (2:17.80).

Corey Dixon placed fifth in the Intermediate 3,000 with a time of 10:44.91.

In the Sub-Youth Division, Colby Smith took second in the long jump (15-7), plus sixth in the 55-meter dash (8.10 seconds).

Teammates Travis Vennard and Kevin Ha took fourth and fifth in the Intermediate shot put with throws of 38 and 37 feet respectively.

Competing in the Young Men division, Jake Curtis was sixth in the 400 at 54 seconds and eighth in the 800 at 2:10.81.
