Charles Eugene “Gene” Swafford, 73, of La Fayette, Ga., went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 21, 2011, at his residence.

He proudly served and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He then continued his expertise in the mechanic field as a Texaco Gas Station owner, followed by several years in pest control in Shreveport, La.

He was a devoted husband and father, loving his many grandchildren with all his heart.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Chuck” Swafford Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Melba Swafford, of La Fayette; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Keith Gallagher of Bentley, La.; sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Penny Loveless of Ringgold, Ga., and Nathan and Michelle Loveless of Rossville, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Denise Swafford of LeCompte, La.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Kelley of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 6 p.m. today, March 23, 2011, in the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home in Rossville, Ga.

He will be taken to Ball, La., where a graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. M. David Roberts officiating at 2 p.m. Friday.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 this evening at the funeral home in Rossville.
