The Lee University Lady Flames softball team returned to Butler Field for the first time since mid-February Friday, splitting a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) doubleheader with Columbia College (S.C.).

The Lady Flames earned a 7-1 win in game one, before dropping a 6-5 decision in eight innings in the nightcap.

In the first contest, Lee opened the scoring with a three-run third inning, which was countered by the Fighting Koalas lone run in the top of the fourth.

Lee added two runs in the fifth on solo home runs from Ana Coscorrosa and Charlie Wooden. They pushed across two more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away for good.

Brittany Balough worked the complete game for the Lady Flames, earning her seventh win of the season. The junior hurler surrendered just one run on four hits, while striking out six and walking one.

The second contest started strong for the Lee ladies, as they got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Columbia took the lead back from the Lady Flames, scoring three runs in the third, capped by a two-run home run by Brittany Koester.

Koester struck again in the fifth inning, ripping a two RBI double, scoring pinch runner Kateland McDaniel and then-left fielder, Sam Santoro.

Not to be outdone, the Lee ladies tied the game with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, thanks in large part to a two-run long ball by Hernanza Ruiz.

The scoring went quiet the next two innings, until Brittany Bendt singled home Kacie Davenport in the first extra frame to take the 6-5 lead. Pitching in relief, Santoro held the Lady Flames scoreless in the bottom half to preserve the win.Caitlin Beashears started in the circle for the Lady Flames, getting no decision after working five innings. Balough (7-7) came on in relief, surrendering the single eighth inning run to get the loss.

Ruiz was the leader at the plate all evening, going a combined 6-for-8, with two doubles and a home run. The senior shortstop contributed five RBI and three runs, and also stole a base in the first contest.

Santoro was the leader at the plate for Columbia, going 4-for-7 for the day, with one RBI and three runs scored.

The Lady Flames (13-10, 4-4) had a quick turnaround. Lee was host Brewton-Parker College for another SSAC set Saturday.
