The Lady Wildcats got back on to the softball diamond Thursday after almost two weeks of rainouts. Their bats were a bit rusty but their defense was solid, and with the help of two runs walked in by McMinn Central pitching and timely hitting by Lydia Triplett, Polk won its second district match of the season.
Polk is now 5-5 overall, 2-0 in District 5-AA play.
Polk plays this weekend in Clarksville at the MTSCA “Play It Again” tournament against teams from across Tennessee and Kentucky.
Polk Scored three of its runs in its half of the second inning when Jordan Triplett reached on a one-out base on balls and Alex Browder followed with a walk. Triplett and Browder both moved up a base on a passed ball. Ashley Frye also walked to load the bases. After a strikeout for out two, Montana Bazzell drew a walk to push Triplett across the plate. Then, Caroline Jenkins walked to push Browder across for another score. Lydia Triplett followed with an RBI-single to drive in Frye.
McMinn scored in the fifth when Baxter led off the inning with a single. Hollingsworth sacrificed her over to second and she took third on the throw to first. West bunted her in for the score.
Polk answered in its half of the fifth after Lindsey Rogers led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a fly out, Rogers advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alex Browder grounded out to short, but allowed Rogers to move to third, where Ashley Frye drove her in with a single.
In the top of the second, McMinn Central tried to come back with Young starting things with a double. Polk pitcher Jordan Triplett induced a fly out to Polk’s infield for the first out and got a ground ball to second for out two, advancing Young to third. Hollingworth followed with a single that allowed Young to score. Hollingsworth was caught in a rundown between first and second and Caroline Jenkins tagged her to end the inning and the game.
Jordan Triplett held McMinn Central’s batters to six hits while walking only two and striking out one.
Polk only managed four hits in the win, but took advantage of seven walks by the McMinn Central Chargerettes.
