Teachers of the Year were honored in a special reception and presentation by the Bradley County Board of Education on Tuesday.

System level teachers of the year were presented with glass plaques in honor of their achievements.

These teachers included Carol Sullivan from Waterville Community Elementary, Carrie Guy from Lake Forest Middle and Donna Spain from Walker Valley High School.

Sullivan has also been named the regional Teacher of the Year and will go on to the grand division where a state Teacher of the Year will be chosen.

Chairman Troy Weathers said many of the winners have been named Teachers of the Year before.

“Thank you, we are grateful for the work you do every day,” Director of Schools Johnny McDaniel said to all the honorees.

Each school also named a Teacher of the Year. Many of the elementary schools named a teacher in both the pre-K through fourth grade and the fifth- through eighth-grade categories.

All the Teachers of the Year were honored with a certificate. McDaniel said the teachers would also receive a certificate from the state. Those certificates were not available at the reception because the state commissioner of education had not signed them yet, according to McDaniel.

It was during the presentation of awards that McDaniel announced that fifth- through eighth-grade Teacher of the Year Joan Brown from North Lee Elementary would be retiring at the end of the school year.

At Valley View Elementary, pre-K through fourth-grade Teacher of the Year Amy Blackwell was a former student of the fifth- through eighth-grade winner Barbara Brantley.

Other building level Teachers of the Year included Pam Love and Kay Elder at Black Fox Elementary, Kim Sivley and Michelle Johnson at Blue Springs Elementary, William White and Betsy Gilbert at Bradley Central High School, Bethany Purser and Amanda Szidiropulosz at Charleston Elementary, Kimberly Jones and Robin McChesney at Hopewell Elementary, Kelley Weber at Lake Forest Middle School, Candy Wiggins and Jamie Fox at Michigan Avenue Elementary School, Susan Ownbey at North Lee Elementary, Trish Sherlin and Missy Chastain at Oak Grove Elementary School, Jeremy Jones and Terrie Kirkpatrick at Ocoee Middle School, Holly Edwards at Park View Elementary, Patty Srite and Pam Coffey at Prospect Elementary, April Koger and Sharon Prohaska at Taylor Elementary, Gwen Lane at Walker Valley High School and Marybeth Hollomon at Waterville Elementary.
