MariLiis Bateman stood at the top of the winner’s podium after capturing the top spot at the AAU TaeKwonDo Nationals in Austin, Texas. She is the first from Clevenlan to claim this title in Olympic Style TaeKwonDo according to Amateur Athletic Union Archives.

Bateman is a part of the Bateman U.S.A. TaeKwonDo Team that participated the tournament June 27.

She captured a gold in sparring and a bronze in Forms at the event and has won her World Certified Black Belt by the United States Expert Karate Association and Kukkiwon (World TaeKwonDo Headquarters) in Seoul, South Korea. Her Black Belt is recognized in 182 countries.

Bateman, a 9-year old who attends Charleston Elementary school and is an A and B student, will be competing at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, La., July 30-Aug. 1. Bateman is accepting further sponsors to help defray costs associated with travel to the tournament.

Also winning a Bronze Medal from the team this year was Katie May in Forms Competition.
