SIGNAL MOUNTAIN — A freak accident at a high school football scrimmage Saturday sent a Bradley County school teacher to the emergency room with a severe head injury.

Regina Pickel, who teaches English at Bradley Central High School, was watching her son, when a player dived for the football and crashed into Pickel’s head with his helmet.

Pickel, who was sitting on the narrow sideline of the practice field, fell backward with her head bleeding profusely. She was immediately attended to by a physician on the scene and walked off the field with her head bandaged to be taken to Erlanger Hospital by private vehicle.

Bradley Central assistant coach Keith Freeman, who along with head coach Damon Floyd and other members of the coaching staff and team rushed to the hospital immediately afterward, did confirm Saturday evening Pickel was in fair and stable condition in the intensive care unit.
