Recycling costs more when the environmentally aware are not aware of Bradley County’s policies for drop-off.

Bradley County offers three collection sites for recyclable materials. Each site operates on a different schedule and collects different items.

When the centers are closed, the gates to the facilities are locked to keep the public from bringing materials in after hours.

“We unfortunately have people who will leave things at the gate after hours,” said Dan Howell, assistant to Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis.

Leaving items by the gate or throwing them over the fence to the facility creates problems for the system.

These materials may be scattered by the wind before the center reopens, making it necessary for the county to pay for the cleanup. Also, items left after hours cannot be properly sorted. Howell said when the facilities are open the county has part-time employees available to help people sort their recyclable materials into the bins.

The county has an agreement with Santek Environmental to pick up the recyclable materials (except for electronics) and deliver them to the companies that reuse them. The electronics go to Creative Recycling in Nashville.

According to the Bradley County website, recycling facilities are located at the Bradley County Landfill, 282 Nature’s Trail, McDonald, TN 37353; Urbane Road Facility, 234 Urbane Road, Cleveland, TN 37312; and Peerless Road Facility, 3110 Peerless Road, Cleveland, TN 37312.

Glass, aluminum drink cans, newspapers and mixed paper can be recycled at all three locations.

Corrugated paperboard, cellphones and plastic bottles and jugs can be recycled at the Urbane Road and Peerless Road locations.

Batteries, used oil and white goods can be recycled at the landfill.

Electronics and military equipment, medical equipment, telecommunications, commercial equipment, office equipment and banking equipment can be recycled at the Peerless Road location. No TVs or computer monitors can be accepted, according to the Bradley County website. For a complete list of the electronics accepted visit http://www.bradleyco.net/recyclecenter.aspx.

The landfill is open for recycling Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Urbane Road Facility is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
