Mullins, Scott head big field at Invitational

Golf competition got under way this morning in the annual Cleveland Country Club Women’s Invitational. More than 90 golfers are competing for this year’s title.

Several local women are among the participants. Maggie Scott and Linda Mullins are among the top contenders representing the host club, but a number of outstanding golfers are participating from outside the local community.

Play began at 8:30 a.m. and will be conclude this afternoon. Complete coverage will be included in Friday’s Banner Sports Section.

Women’s play today is only the start of a busy golfing weekend.

Cleveland Country’s Club annual Men’s Invitational is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Country Club general manager Lamar Mills says competition will begin at 7:30 p.m. both days, with some of the best amateur golfers from around the area.

Defending champion is Richard Spangler Jr. of Hixson, who is also among the leaders in the 96th annual Tennessee Amateur Championship this week at Colonial Country Club’s South Course in Cordova.

n Brett Barry of Jackson holds a one-shot lead over Nashville’s Craig Smith in the state amateur after both golfers fired a 1-under-par 71 on Wednesday.

Barry is at 4-under-par 140 after 36 holes, while Smith is at 141. Spangler trails the leaders by 10 shots with his 150 total.

Cleveland Country Club’s Matt Crowder is at 151 after the first two rounds of the TGA tournament.
