Walker Valley uncorked an impressive display of first-half offense behind the running of Reggie Mills and the arm of quarterback Cory Cook in a 22-6 freshman win over visiting East Ridge Monday.

“They played really well,” said freshman coach Tony Spencer. They were ready to play, they came out very aggressive on defense and gave us a chance to score and get some points on the board. They allowed us to play a lot of players and it was really fun tonight.”

Mills skirted around the Pioneers’ defense for 82 yards on the Mustangs’ first snap of the second quarter to give Walker Valley the lead. Quarterback Cook then hit Elijah Haynie for the 2-point conversion, putting the Mustangs up 8-0.

A 35-yard scamper by Mills set Walker Valley up at the East Ridge 15 midway through the quarter. On the next play, Cook dropped back and found Giles McDaniel open for the TD with 5:11 to go in the half. The PAT attempt fell short and Walker Valley led 13-0.

“Reggie is just Reggie. He’s got what it takes. You will be seeing a lot of him,” Spencer said.

The Mustangs put one more TD on the board with :27 left in the first half on another Cook to Haynie aerial. Walker Valley converted to make it 22-0 at the break.

The Pioneers broke the shutout with a touchdown early in the fourth to make the final 22-6.

“Haynie has got great hands and Cory is just a ball player. He is a competitor. The line gave him a good chance to throw the ball. It was a good team effort. They blocked and executed on those plays. I’m proud of our team,” said Spencer.
