Furey served as the head coach at Mount Vernon Nazarene (the host school) for 20 years, but he will not be facing his old squad in the two-day event. Instead the Flames will face Campbellsville University (Ky.) at 2 p.m. on Friday and test Mountain State (W.Va.) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Campbellsville is coming off a 19-6 season in 2010 and Mountain State posted a 9-3-6 mark. Like Lee, Mountain State will be under the watchful eyes of first-year coach Steve Laraba.
“We are really looking forward to this weekend‘s tournament,” said Furey, who will be seeking his first victory as the Flames’ coach. Lee will be trying to bounce back from a season-opening 3-1 defeat to third-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio) this past Saturday.
“We need to build on the positive things from Saturday’s match,” he added. “But we also have been working on cleaning up the issues to be better. Hopefully, things will begin to come together nicely starting on Friday. Getting our first win is big, so I know the guys will be hungry for a good result.”
After this weekend’s matches in Ohio, the Flames will return to the Lee Soccer Field on the following Friday and on Tennessee in a 7 p.m. start.
