Lee University student Matt Ray was the recipient of the 2011 Crosby Scholarship, presented by Lee President Dr. Paul Conn on Sept. 22 during a chapel service.

The Crosby Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Henry Crosby, a close friend of Conn and his family.

Faculty members nominate a young man entering his junior year for the scholarship. The award recipient is then chosen from the nominations by a scholarship committee.

Ray, 30, of Dandridge, attributes a large part of his success to the love and support from his family, which includes his wife; son Christian, 8; and daughter Haylie, 2. Ray plans to continue his education and pursue a doctorate degree.

Relying completely on financial aid to earn a degree in sociology from Lee, Ray said he was humbled and grateful to be awarded this prestigious scholarship.

“I was both surprised and honored when I found out I had been chosen for the scholarship. I realize how special this award is to Lee and Dr. Conn.” said Ray. “[The scholarship] makes a big difference for me and my family.”
