He was employed at Bowater for 39 years.
He enjoyed farming, gardening and being around friends and family. He was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, H.L. Hughes Sr. and Ruth Hughes.
He is survived by his children: Dewey Hughes and wife, Drucilla, of Charleston, Doug Hughes and wife, Connie, of Cleveland and Hughie Hughes and wife, Tammy, of Charleston; brothers: Bob Hughes and Bill Hughes and wife, Grace, all of Charleston; sisters: Joe Lyle of Chattanooga and Alice Miller and husband, John, of Oak Ridge; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Spencer officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Jack Jackson, Bob Lee, Jim Gatlin, David Ivy, Ed Sliger and Rusty Patterson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include Jim Lockmiller, Calvin Paul and Harry Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
