Andrea Gomez is making waves as the new Cleveland Family YMCA aquatic director.

She will be making a great splash as she brings enthusiasm, experience and new classes to the pool, said Lee McChesney, Cleveland Family YMCA vice president and executive director.

“We are very pleased to announce that Andrea has joined our team. She will lead the way in offering top quality youth and adult swim lessons, as well as new aquatic group fitness classes,” said McChesney. “We are glad she has joined our team.”

One of the first new programs Gomez will bring to the table is Aqua Zumba.

“Most everyone has heard of Zumba and how it is sweeping the nation as one of the hottest fitness trends. Now, for the first time we will offer Aqua Zumba classes. It is going to be a fantastic class,” said Gomez, who is certified in Zumba, Aqua Zumba, as well as AFAA Fitness.

“Aqua Zumba is a Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow, calorie-busting, water aerobics class set to Latin music.”

Gomez comes to the Y after spending more than seven years with the Parks and Recreation Department in Michigan.

While working for parks and recreation, Gomez served as water aerobics and swim instructor, pool manager, lifeguard and fitness director. Andrea earned an associate’s degree in education and fitness from Henry Ford Community College.

She has also attended Eastern Michigan University and studied fitness education.

“I love working with kids in the pool and being active with children. I have many goals as aquatic director. First and foremost, I want to be a team player and leader and help make the aquatic department as strong as it can be. We want to offer a great swimming program for the community. We want participants to be excited about this program and to have positive experiences.”

Gomez will offer free demonstrations of Aqua Zumba classes on Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. and Thursday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m.

Members and nonmembers are welcome to try out a class. Guests must be 18 years old or older.

“Aqua Zumba is just the first of new classes and programs to come. Keep a watch for other exciting program offerings beginning in January,” she said.
