Arlene Anna Bull Rosa of Indian Trail, N.C., died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center.

She was born March 30, 1923, to Arthur and Marie Bull of Millard, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Calvin Bull, who was lost during World War II.

She was educated in the Elkorn, Neb., schools and graduated from the Burroughs Business School in Omaha, Neb.

She married Richard J. Rosa on April 2, 1943, and was a constant source of support for her husband and family as her husband’s business career moved them to many states over the years. She was active in many church and volunteer organizations.

She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing rounds with her husband and friends at Tanglewood golf course in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

After 68 years of marriage, she is survived by her husband, Richard; son, Robert and wife, Ann Roza; daughter, Merry Lynne Hartrick; daughter, Susan Kay Haveman and husband, Allan; two grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

Arlene’s husband, Richard, is a Purple Heart veteran of World War II, and she became interested in the Winston-Salem, N.C., Purple Heart Chapter 638 and the benefits they provide for veterans. She organized and served as president of the first Purple Heart Ladies Auxiliary in North Carolina. The services they organized for the Veteran’s Hospital in Salisbury, N.C., and Asheville, N.C., are still continued by the ongoing organization.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Morningstar Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. Burial of her ashes in Omaha, Neb., will be at a later date.

Purple Heart Chapter 638 of Winston-Salem honored Dick and Arlene Roza by naming a scholarship in their honor for their years of service. The annual scholarship is available to all qualified JROTC students of Purple Heart veterans.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dick and Arlene Roza Scholarship Fund, care of PH Chapter 638, 5036 Brian Center Lane, Winston-Salem NC 27106, or to the Morning Star Lutheran Church Building Fund, 12509 Idlewilde Road, Matthews NC 28105.
