He was a U.S. Army veteran having served as a cannon crew member, and after his discharge he served with the Army Reserves for several years.
He was a member of Missionary Unity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Allene Long; and a sister, Mary Nell Hall.
Survivors include his wife, Tilda Ashley; son, Joey Ashley; and daughter, Linda Henry, all of Cleveland; grandsons: Mitchell, James and Wayne Henry, all of Cleveland; great-grandchildren: Jefferson, Lucas and Colin Henry, and Malachi Simpson; brother, Richard Lewis Bowers of Chatsworth, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Remembrance of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at the North Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes with the Rev. Bennie Watson officiating.
Interment will follow at the Dill Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Mitchell Henry, James Henry, Wayne Henry, Jefferson Henry, Andy Bowen and Doug Bowen.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
