The proceeds go directly to fund the local social programs of the Corps. The money will stay in the city of Cleveland and surrounding counties to help the following ministries — Youth internship program; youth and adult Bible study; “Thrive” for youth and college students; children’s programs; women’s ministries; Life Skills Program; Diaper Bags of Hope Program; Band of Brothers Men’s Ministry; addiction programs; family enrichment; weekly worship opportunities for all ages; social service programs, which include utilities assistance, medical expenses, emergency shelter, transportation, clothing and disaster relief; Angel Tree; Jingle Bell Jog; Community Choir; Sidewalk Sunday School; Mobile Kitchen Outreach; Smiles of Hope; Fan Drive/HeatShare Programs; summer youth camps; and senior support programs.
“All the coffee is direct trade, meaning we can trace the origin to the land on which it was grown and to those who harvested it,” said Joel Rogers, coffeehouse manager. “Our roast master, who was trained in Africa where coffee first came from, travels to each farm directly without having to go through a middleman.”
With the art, culture and coffee theme, the coffeehouse also will feature local talent from artists and musicians, said Sgt. Ruthie Forgey of The Salvation Army.
“Every quarter we have a new theme,” Rogers said. “Once we announce it, we encourage artists of all kinds to begin working on their submissions. The current theme is ‘Hope’ ... We have oil paintings, charcoal on canvas and photography. The community is able to vote for its favorite piece in the coffeehouse or online. When the winner is chosen, his or her artwork is displayed.”
Also, bands, musicians and singers are featured on the weekends.
And, the coffeehouse offers a three-level internship as well to those who want to learn a new trade.
“Those in our internship program, which is 350 hours, learn basic service, customer service, community and food service,” Rogers said.
The coffeehouse is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 11 p.m. For more information about The Cleveland Corps, call 308-3467. For more information about The Inman Street Coffeehouse, call 476-5243.
