Garland Hoyle Murray, 66, a resident of Cleveland, passed away at his residence on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, surrounded by his family.

He was a native of Cleveland and was born on Aug. 13, 1945, a son of the late G.H. “Bert” Murray and Geneva Cunningham Murray.

He retired from Maytag after beginning his service at Hardwick Stove in the early 1970s. He was an elder at New Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was an avid birdwatcher, insatiable reader, beekeeper and farmer. The delights of his life, however, were his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers: Clifford, Roy Lee, Leonard, Carl and Billy Murray, all of Cleveland.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sherry Triplett Murray; one daughter, Breann Murray Tolley; two grandchildren: Garland “Land” Tolley and Genevieve “Evie” Tolley; son-in-love, Robert “Butch” Tolley, all of Cleveland; sisters and their husbands: Frances and Jim Swafford of Cleveland and Carolyn and Jim Milligan of Austin, Texas; three brothers: Garry and his wife, Janice, of Cleveland, Ray Murray of Lenior City and Gordon Sam of Birchwood; sisters-in-law: Irene Murray, Tina Murray, Joan Smith and her husband, Manuel, all of Cleveland; and he also leaves to cherish his memory many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at New Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 310 New Murraytown Road N.W., Cleveland, with the Revs. John McCarty, Sam Melton, James Patterson, and Louisa Parsons officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the memorial service.

A graveside committal service will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at the Murray Family Cemetery at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the New Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 310 New Murraytown Rd, N.W., Cleveland TN 37312.
