CMS Lady Raiders

Making History

The Cleveland Middle School eighth-grade Lady Raiders traveled to region tournament host Cherokee Middle of Kingston to participate in the finals of the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association Area 4-AAA Region Basketball Tournament Thursday. Despite a low-scoring game, the Lady Raiders were able to limit the Cherokee Middle Lady Jackets to only 18 points and walk away with a 28-18 Area 4 Region Championship for the second year in a row.

Emilee Spann had eight rebounds, three steals, two points and five assists. Taelor Hill added eight points, four rebounds and three steals. Shawnia Anderson scored four points, pulled four rebounds and snagged three steals while Gabby Saliba brought down six boards and scored eight points. The Lady Raiders earned a No. 1 seed for the TMSSA East Tennessee state sectionals in Sevierville.

This will be the third trip in a row to the sectionals for the Cleveland Lady Raiders and the fourth year in a row of competing in large, season-ending tournaments for 12-year CMS coach Kelli Fulton. The 2008-11 CMS varsity Lady Raiders had a combined 67 wins and only three losses, won the East Tennessee Christmas Championships in Maryville, the first CMS AAAA TNT state invitational championship in 2009 and made it to the semifinals of the TMSAA sectionals.

The 2011-12 team is currently 17-4 and looks to make more history by bringing home CMS’s first TMSAA East Tennessee AAA championship. The 2011-12 team members are Shawnia Anderson, Emilee Spann, Gabby Saliba, Taelor Hill, Madeline Fleming, Kathleen Alomar, Kellee Geren, Sabrina Lovelace, Gabria Hubbard and Sofia Stamatiatas.
