Many big basketball games have been staged in Walker Arena, but very few, if any, could match Thursday and Saturday evening’s action when the Lee Flames host No. 4 ranked Southern Polytechnic State University tonight at 8 p.m. and coach Tommy Brown turns right around and pits his No. 14 Flames against No. 9 Mountain State on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Southern Poly (Marietta, Ga.) comes to town fresh off a upset of No. 1-ranked Shorter University. Mountain State will certainly be seeking revenge. The West Virginia club was upset by the Flames on Jan. 3 in Beckley. The Cougars are coached by Bob Bolen, who recently became the winningest coach ever in West Virginia college history. His record stands at 479-123.

The Flames have chalked up six straight wins and 14 victories in their last 15 starts since losing to Southern Poly in a thriller on Jan. 21. However, coach Brown notes that his Lee club will need to put together two consistent halves against the Runnin’ Hornet and Cougars to have a chance to post huge wins. In their last two outings, the Flames have fallen behind in the first 20 minutes and forced to make second-half comebacks to win.

The Lady Flames will be going after victory No. 27 tonight at 6 p.m. to open the doubleheader action. Coach Marty Rowe has his ladies playing top-ranked defense and listed as the No. 4 team by the NAIA. The Lady Flames are on a 17-game winning streak after falling to No. 2 Union University on Dec. 10. They will host Voorhees College (S.C.) before the men’s contest on Saturday.

One of the highlights of tonight’s action will be the appearance of the Southern Adventist Gym Masters at halftime of the men’s game. The Gym Masters have performed all over the world and will be making their annual appearance in Walker Arena. On Saturday, between the men and women’s games, the senior members of the 2011-12 basketball teams will be honored.
