The NSDAR theme for the year is “Preserve the Past, Enhance the Present, and Invest in the Future.”
Honoring these young people shows the DAR commitment to the future.
Harriet Caldwell, DAR chair for the American History and Good Citizenship Awards, and Linda Foster, Ocoee Chapter regent, presented the awards to the outstanding students.
The DAR American History award was presented to recognize and honor eighth-grade students who have demonstrated outstanding work in the study of American History.
The Good Citizenship award recognizes senior high school students who have demonstrated good citizenship.
Good Citizenship awards were given to Briana Howell, Bradley Central High School; Caleb Hiddleson, Cleveland High; Hannah Fuller, Copper Basin High; Cody Burger, Polk County High; Rachael-Sarah Jubilee Bell, Tennessee Christian Preparatory School; and Colten Morris, Walker Valley High.
Howell is the daughter of Chip and Penny Howell. She is currently a member of the varsity basketball cheerleading squad. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership, Beta Club and DECA.
She is also a dual-enrolled student at Lee University and Cleveland State Community College. She is also a Bear Scholar as well as a Tennessee Scholar. She is vice president of the Student Government and serves as an office assistant for two years.
She has participated in elementary training at Prospect kindergarten class and helped with DECA’s Christmas party at Oak Grove.
She attends North Cleveland Baptist, where she has participated in missions programs to Brazil, Kentucky and with Ocoee Outreach.
Hiddleson is the son of Gayle and Vic Hiddleson. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where he is president and a member of the Leadership Team. He is also a member of Anchor Club and Skills USA.
Hiddleson is a member of the varsity baseball team and varsity basketball team. He was a member of the All-tournament Team for Baseball in 2011. He received the Golden Glove Award in 2009.
He has assisted with Creating Christmas Memories, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and participated in the FCA Honduras Missions trip.
His honors include recipient of World Geography Award, 2009; Academic Award for Baseball Team, 2009, 2010 and 2011; French 1 Award,, 2010; Anatomy and Physiology Honors Award, 2011; Chamber of Commerce Leadership Team, and was a Boys State delegate, where he was a member of the Governor’s Cabinet, 2011.
Fuller is the daughter of Betty and Mark Fuller.
She is a Copper Basin Scholar. She is also a member of the Beta Club, junior class president, homecoming representative 2011 and technical director for CBTV..
Her academic awards include art, broadcasting, Humanities 10, Biology 1, Algebra II, Algebra 1, Spanish I, Physical Science and video editing.
She is a member of Mine City Baptist Church Youth Group and Drama Team.
Burger is the son of Larry Burger Jr. and Dana Henry.
He is a four-year basketball payer at PCHS. He is a member of the Pep Club and TSA. He has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. He had the highest GPA in English II.
Burger works part-time at Hardee’s. After the April storms, he helped in the cleanup. He also assisted in basketball camp at PCHS. He participates with his church’s giving of clothes, food and supplies.
Bell is the daughter of Mike and Lisa Bell.
Her school activities include cheerleading captain,, member of volleyball team, and member of homecoming court. She was recipient of a leadership award for cheerleading and an English Award.
She started and leads a girls’ Bible study, which encourages girls to appreciate their inner beauty.
Her community activities include Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army Christmas Child, Creating Christmas Memories, volunteer firefighter Cade with Claxton Volunteer Emergency Services, coaching girls’ cheerleading squad and volunteering in political campaigns.
Morris is the son of Tisha and Chris Pack. He is a Tennessee Scholar. He is a member of SGA, Circle of Champions, DECA and the 10th-grade homecoming court.
He has more than 80 hours in community service projects. He is also a member of Brittsville Baptist Church and youth group.
The recipients of the DAR American History Award are Michael Woody, Chilhowee Middle School; Chris Pistrang, Cleveland Middle School; Abby Scoggins, Copper Basin Middle School; Brandon Miler, Lake Forest Middle School; Sara Wilson, Ocoee Middle School; and Val Berger, TCPS.
Woody is the son of Lynn Arthur and Michael Woody. He has received the science award in the fifth, sixth and seventh grades. He is also a Cleveland Junior Bass Master member. He was recipient of the CMS Junior Bobcats’ Quarterback Award, 2011-2012; and Beta Club.
Pistrang is the son of Mark and Wendy Pistrang. His honors include sixth-grade Team Award, Life Skills Award, Choir Award and Cross Country Academic; Student Council representative, Duke Talent Search honoree and seventh-grade Teams Language Arts Award.
Scoggins is the daughter of Cathy Painter. Her awards include English 7 Academic, English 8 and Mathematics Award. She is a member of Junior Beta Club and CBMS basketball team.
Miller is the son of Jennifer and Thomas Miller. He has had all “A’s” through grades 3 to 7; Advanced TCAP, Presidential awards and has been invited for membership in national Honor Society and Who’s Whom Among Students..
He is a member of South Cleveland Church of God, where he participates in the drama team.
Wilson is the daughter of Kris and Vance Burger. She has been a Gold Scholar, Bronco’s Team Character Award winner, Beta Club member, National Young Leader Scholar, Clydesdale’s Top Academic Award and Pre-Algebra Math Award, volleyball team, OMS band, tennis and Leadership in Action.
Berger is the son of Kris and Vaughn Berger. He is member of National Junior Honor Society, vice president of Junior Beta Club. He has been active on the schools basketball team. He participated in mission work.
