VISITING THE COURTROOM, from left, were Lucas Suits, Max Cooper, Kathleen Alcock, Kaitlyn Madson, Tina Summers, Victoria Freeman, Claire Gilliland, Kelsie Hartley, Harper Fuller, Matthew Newman, Evan Scannapiego, Jonathan Murray, Brodey Phillips, Cameron Alexander, Ben Stetson, Drew Cook, Grayson Buchanan, Jane Anderson, Matthew Peterson, Allison McGinnis, Gayla Miller and Joan Baker.
Before court opened, the students were introduced to the members of the court to gain understanding of how each person involved contributes to the events that need to occur in order to determine a verdict. Public Defender Richard Hughes explained that the U.S. judicial system is different from every other country’s system. He said it is respect for the law that makes it work. The class watched Judge Amy Reedy issue a sentence based on the offense and the plea of “guilty or not guilty.” The study will continue for several more weeks with students participating in debate and a mock trial.
