The Cleveland State Cougars pounded out 15 hits and 13 runs Monday afternoon at Cougar Field, sweeping a doubleheader from the visiting Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs junior varsity.
Ethan Davis tossed a neat two-hit shutout in game one for the Cougars (14-8, 2-4) and three Cougar hurlers combined to twirl two innings each in the second game to hold the Bulldogs scoreless again by final scores of 3-0 and 10-0.
The Cougars picked up all the run support Davis needed in the bottom of the first in game one. J.D. Cowart drew a walk, moved to third on a passed ball and a Bulldog error, and crossed home on a single from Allen for a 1-0 lead.
Cleveland State tacked on two more runs in the third on a trio of Bulldog miscues and an RBI single by Colby Harmon for a 3-0 advantage.
Davis went the distance to get the win while Casey Davis took the loss for Wesleyan.
Once again the Cougars put a mark on the board in the first frame to start game two. Back-to-back triples by Harmon and Michael Hargrove produced the run.
The Cougar bats exploded an inning later with a five-spot. Cade Seeley singled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to get the rally started. Harmon found a pitch to his liking and promptly unloaded a three-run blast to push the Cougar lead to 6-0.
Harmon finished his outstanding afternoon with a sacrifice fly for another run in the fourth, Colby Seeley singled in another run in the fifth and Hargrove doubled and scored in the sixth to cap game two and finish the sweep.
Jared Burton (1-0) started for the Cougars and picked up the win while Justin Sturgeon and Tyler Kilgore tossed two scoreless innings each in relief. Tyler Fee took the loss for the Bulldogs.
The Cougars will now get ready for a weekend series with Dyersburg State on Friday and Saturday at Cougar Field.
