ATHENS — The Cleveland State baseball team pounded the junior varsity Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan into submission on Tuesday afternoon in their own backyard.

Grant Zawadzki singled in the top of the first in game one, stole second and third and scored on a single by Michael Hargrove. DeAndre Allen doubled in two more to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs came back to tie the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the second frame on singles from Mason Trenda and Josh Bolton. The tying run crossed in the third on a wild pitch.

The Cougars then quickly put the game out of reach with a six-spot in the fourth and seven more runs in the fifth.

Michael Lyons singled in a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, Zawadzki doubled in a pair of runs, Allen knocked in three more and J.D. Cowart plated another as the Cougars finished game one in a hurry.

Ethan Davis (4-0) picked up the win for the Cougars (17-10) while Derek Chandler tossed in relief. Phillip Akridge took the loss.

Same song, second verse was the theme of game two as the Cougar hit parade kept right on rolling.

Hargrove doubled in a run in the first to start the onslaught. Cade Seeley drew a walk, stole second and third and scored on a single from Devin Fish in the second and Seeley and Colin Sullivan knocked in a run each in the third to help the Cougars to a 5-0 lead.

The hits just kept on coming as Zawadzki crushed a two-run homer in the fourth, Seeley picked up another RBI by getting plunked with the bases full of Cougars and Randall Coley and Fish doubled in two runs each to push the lead to 12-0.

Colby Harmon hit a solo homer in the fifth while Chase Edwards joined the fun with a three-run dinger to put the exclamation point on a big day of Cougar baseball.

Zack Helms doubled in two runs in the bottom of the fourth to help the Bulldogs avoid the shutout and the home team tacked on two more in the fifth to account for the final runs of the day.

Zack Taylor (4-2) got the win for the Cougars while Marcus Hunter, Justin Sturgeon and Hunter Hammond all pitched in relief. Casey Cooper took the loss for the Bulldogs.

The Cougars will travel to Roane State this weekend for a three-game series.
