Bernice Stanford Wattenbarger, 89, of Athens, died Friday, March 23, 2012, at Wellington Place of Athens.
A lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late AC (Pete) and Gracie Vandergriff Stanford.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Archie Wattenbarger; a son, Ricky Wattenbarger; and a brother, Austin Stanford.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, where she was a member of the senior church choir, and taught a children’s Sunday school class for many years.
She helped start the Sunbeam Missionary program at the church, was active in WMU of the church, and loved to rock the babies in the church nursery.
She was a member of the Evening Pilot Club where she was a past president and treasurer.
She and her late husband, Archie, owned and operated the Athens Press Job Printing and also published the Athens Press Newspaper. She was associated with the Tennessee Deptment of Employment Security for 30 years until her retirement.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Reita and Jerry Hamby of Benton; one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Brenda Wattenbarger of Cleveland; two granddaughters and their spouses: Stacy and Chris Greenwood and Stephanie and Ryan Cooke; two grandsons and their spouses: Jonathan and Katelyn Hamby and David and Amber Wattenbarger; two great-grandchildren: Lily Grace Greenwood and Jude Archer Wattenbarger; three sisters: Eunice Buttram of Athens, Jo Zimmerman and her husband Ralph of Sweetwater, and June Prince of Water Haven, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted, 2:30 p.m. today, March 25, 2012, in the chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services of Athens with Dr. Jason Clark and Dr. Carlos Peterson officiating.
Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., today, prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be nephews and grandsons.
