Kalie Henderson put the Lady Bulldogs on top in the bottom of the first in game one with one swing of her bat, smacking a two-run homer to put the home team up 2-0.
Ashlen Mitchell doubled in a run for the Lady Cougars (13-11) in the top of the third then singled, stole second and scored the tying run in the sixth when Maura Ditto doubled her home. Sydney Howell put Cleveland State on top for the first time in game one with a single for a 3-2 lead.
Casey Griffin singled and came around to score in the seventh on an error and Howell came through in the clutch again with an RBI single to push the lead to 5-2.
Macey Trentham tripled and scored in the Lady Bulldogs’ last at bat, but the Lady Cougars finally recorded the last out to take game one.
Meghan Smith had a strong outing in going the distance to get the win, while Brooke Melhorn suffered the loss.
The Maura Ditto show took center stage in game two as she belted a two-run homer in the first inning then added a solo shot in the third to give Cleveland State a 3-0 lead.
Mitchell knocked in a run for the Lady Cougars in the fifth while Skye Jackson singled in a run for Wesleyan in the third. April Wilson and Kaylee Jackson knocked in a run each for the home team in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.
Halen Weeks doubled to start a Lady Cougar rally in the sixth. Kelly Sullins and Griffin added an RBI single each to push the lead back to a three-run spread, 6-3. Back-to-back doubles from Mitchell and Howell in the seventh added an insurance run and the Lady Cougars completed the win and the sweep.
Kenly Lambert went the distance for Cleveland State to get the win while Sarah Kilgore took the loss.
“We needed these two wins today,” said Lady Cougars coach Katie Willingham. “We have to prepare for Walters State this weekend and these games helped us do that.”
The Lady Cougars will host Walters State Saturday at 1 p.m.
