He was born July 3, 1934, in Cleveland. He graduated from Bradley Central High School in 1952 and played basketball at Tennessee Wesleyan. In 1957 he graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a degree in industrial management. He was a well-known retired contractor and builder in the Cleveland area.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He served on the board and was past president of the Tri County Sportsman League. He was a past member of the Cleveland Country Club and a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.
He was the son of the late Edward R. and Katherine E. Gibson. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Everhart.
Since his retirement he spent the majority of his time with family and grandkids.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Toye W. Gibson; daughter, Toye Nicole Hargis and her husband, Donald; sons: Robert Gray Gibson and his wife, Randi, and Richard McCauley Gibson, all of Cleveland; grandchildren: Toye Alexandrian Clark, Madalyn Lucille McCauley of Nashville, Rylie McKenna Higgins, Leah Nicole Hargis and Andrew Gray Gibson.
A Remembrance of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Broad Street Methodist Church with the Revs. Reed Shell and Debbie Stokes officiating.
Interment will follow at the Hilcrest Cemetery with Dewey Woody Jr., Mike Woody, Jimmy Woody, Mark McLain, Lewis Jones and Jeff Young serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Pesterfield, Leon Ledford, Jimmy Cason, Neil Henry, Pete Ward, Dennis Eslinger, Jack Hall and the class of 1952.
The family will receive friends at the church from noon until the service time on Saturday.
