CHARLESTON, S.C. — Walker Valley’s baseball Mustangs wrapped up their spring break baseball foray to South Carolina Saturday morning with a win.

The squad went 2-1 over the trip and walked away from their final game against First Baptist of James Island with an extra inning 5-2 win.

Mustang batters had some catching up to do as their opposition pushed the first run across in the bottom of the second to go up a run and added another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.

Walker Valley responded by taking advantage of James Island’s six errors to plate a pair in the top of the fifth to tie the contest at two-all.

Late game heroics were in order as the contest went into extra innings. Jared Broome led things off with a big single, Caleb Longley delivered big with a big, bases-loaded two RBI double and Logan Longwith added an RBI single that brought the ’Stangs charging ahead to a 5-2 victory.

Longwith also recorded the win for Walker Valley, going four strong innings and only allowing a pair of hits while striking out four opposing batters.

Mustangs 7, Pinewood Prep 3

The Mustangs also recorded a win against the host school Pinewood Preparatory in the second game of a two game set Thursday evening.

Walker Valley batters laced 10 hits to combine for seven runs while limiting their hosts to seven hits and three runs in the victory.

Three runs crossed the plate in the top of the first for the Bradley County crew, allowing them to gain the game’s momentum.

But, Pinewood struck back plating a run in the first and second to make it a one-run Walker Valley lead.

Mustang hitters responded by tacking on two more runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to give them some breathing room.

The host squad tried to rally, plating a run in the bottom of the closing frame, but the effort fell short, allowing Walker Valley to walk away with a 7-3 win.

Matthew Simmons recorded the win, tossing a complete game and recording 10 strikeouts while allowing seven hits.

Indians 10, Mustangs 8

The lone Mustang loss kicked off their road trip as the ’Stangs faced off against Dobyns-Bennett in a fast paced slugfest.

Dobyns-Bennett jumped out to a quick lead with a run in the opening frame and another three in the top of the second.

Walker Valley answered though, getting on the board in the bottom of the second with two of its own and grabbing the lead in its half of the third with three more runs to make it a 5-4 ballgame.

Indian batters retook the lead in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs crossing the plate. Walker Valley paced them, tying the score at 7-7 in its half of the frame.

Again Dobyns-Bennett struck, plating another run in the fifth, and again the Mustangs answered, bringing across the tying run in the bottom of the inning.

It was a horse race to the finish and when the Indians came up to bat in the top of the seventh they meant business, pushing two across to raise the ante.

Walker Valley tried to call but fell just short, settling for the 10-8 loss.
