BENTON — It was another good night for Polk County’s Lady Wildcats as they welcomed Sweetwater in for some District 5-AA softball action.
Polk pounded the visitors for 15 runs, while starter Jordan Triplett earned a complete game, holding Sweetwater to a pair of unearned runs.
Both Sweetwater runs came in the opening frame when a two-out error allowed the runner to reach safely.
The visiting Lady Wildcats capitalized on the mistake when the next batter hammered a two RBI tater to give Sweetwater an early 2-0 lead.
Lily Cuzzort kicked off the home team’s offense in the home half of the second when she led off with a single and later advanced on a passed ball. Jordan brought her home with an RBI single and then stole second to get into scoring position.
That allowed Sydney Rogers to notch an RBI single, and Felecia Johnson followed suit with a single of her own.
Danielle Harvey capped things off with Polk’s third straight single, this one scoring a pair to put the Lady Wildcats up by three.
The onslaught continued in the third when Cuzzort led off another inning, this time with a solo shot. Caroline Jenkins narrowly missed going back-to-back and settled for a double.
Briana Muller was plunked, and Rogers got her second, third and forth RBIs with a three-run bomb, giving Polk County a 9-2 lead.
It didn’t stop there though, and in the bottom of the fourth the Lady Wildcats piled on a few more.
Lydia Triplett led off the frame with a single, Cuzzort was hit by a pitch and Jenkins drove in one with a sacrifice grounder and another run crossed on an error on the same play.
In the fifth and final inning Kaitlyn Williams reached safely on another Sweetwater error before trading places with Felecia Johnson on a fielder’s choice.
Harvey jacked the third Polk County home run, and Lydia Triplett reached on a double and was driven in when Sydney Sloan notched an RBI single.
Cuzzort reached safely for a fourth time when she knocked an RBI double to finally cap the Lady Wildcat barrage.
In the end, Benton’s Lady Wildcats handed their Sweetwater counterparts a 15-2 shelling.
Next up, the two teams will trade venues as they meet at Sweetwater for a 5:30 start.
