Margaret Thurman, 79, a resident of Athens, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at her residence.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a retired sewing machine operator. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, fishing, cooking and talking on her CB radio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Addie Hill; daughters: Sharon Webb and Dorothy Burnette; brothers: Jim Simmons, Glen Hill, Fred Simmons and Clay Simmons.

She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Sue and Charles Smith of Cleveland; son, James “Rooster” Thurman of Athens; sisters: Gladys Thurman of Athens and Billie Martin of Madisonville; grandchildren: Kins Marr, Lynn Bishop, Tim Smith and Jason Davis; great-grandchildren: Travis Davis, Haley Bishop, Logan Smith and Solomon Smith; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Vickie Millett, Joye Starritt and Jackie Warfield.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 27 2012, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home of Etowah with the Rev. Randall Butler officiating.

A burial with a white dove release ceremony will follow at St. Mary’s Church Cemetery in Madisonville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the funeral home.
