GALLATIN, The Cleveland State baseball team hit the road on Tuesday for a midweek tuneup nonconference game with Volunteer State. Derek Chandler scattered four hits over eight strong innings of work as the Cougars made quick work of the Pioneers to take a 7-1 win.

DeAndre Allen put the Cougars on top quickly in the top of the second with a solo homer. Brent Morris singled and scored in the fourth on a base hit by Taylor Foster as the Pioneers tied the game at 1-1.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the sixth to set up a big inning. Grant Zawadzki singled in a run, Allen followed with another RBI hit. J.D Cowart added a run with a sacrifice fly to left field and Derek Shugart completed the five-run outburst with a two-run single to give Cleveland State a 6-1 advantage.

Devin Fish singled in the top of the ninth and Chase Edwards doubled him in for an insurance run. Jeb Scoggins tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth as the Cougars finished off the win.

Chandler got the win for Cleveland State while Jake Harper took the loss for Volunteer State.

The Cougars will now return home for a three game weekend series to finish the regular season with nationally ranked Columbia State starting on Friday.
